Medical Marijuana: Which Conditions It Treats

July 17, 2017 No Comments

Medical Marijuana uses chemicals found in the marijuana plant to treat conditions. Recreational marijuana and medical marijuana have almost the same content but the latter is used for medical purposes.

There are over 100 different chemicals in a marijuana plant. These chemicals are known as cannabinoids. They have different impact on the body when someone takes marijuana. However, there are two main chemicals in marijuana that are used for medicinal purposes. These are THC or Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and CBD or cannabidiol. The latter is the main chemical that makes a person feel high after smoking marijuana.

What are the uses of Medical Marijuana?

Here are the different conditions that you might not know that are treated with medical Marijuana.

Alzheimer’s

Medical Marijuana can potentially delay or prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Scientific studies found out that medical marijuana can effectively cut the production of beta-amyloid proteins which are the main cause of Alzheimer’s disease according to scientists. Medical marijuana also reduces symptoms of this disease in patients. Some of the symptoms include anxiety, insomnia, hallucinations, aggression and depression.

HIV/AIDS

A study revealed that medical marijuana can be used by HIV-positive people to make them gain weight, reduce neuropathic pain, make them have better sleep and eat better. This therefore means that HIV/AIDS individuals can find some relief in medical marijuana despite the lack of effective cure to their condition.

Seizures & Epilepsy

Cannabidiol or CBD is one of the two main compounds of marijuana used for medicinal purposes. This compound does not have the ‘high’ effect and it was found that it can treat seizures and epilepsy. A study by New York University found out that there was a 50% decrease in the frequency of attacks in people who experience seizures.

Menstrual Cramps

This is not a serious condition and it cannot be classified as a disease but it’s still an issue among many women especially those who experience excruciating pain during menstruation. Medical marijuana can effectively reduce the pain caused by cramps during menstruation. If you have been suffering from pain caused by menstrual cramps, you need to start using marijuana to reduce the discomfort.

Bowel Disease

A study revealed that individuals suffering from Inflammatory bowel disease can experience improved quality of life by taking marijuana. In this study, people who smoked marijuana said that they experienced less pain and an increase in BMI.

Asthma

A recent study revealed that marijuana is less harmful to the lungs compared to smoking tobacco and cigarettes. Individuals with asthma can breathe more easily by taking marijuana according to a study.

Marijuana has many healing properties which have been used for centuries. Marijuana has been used in many areas to treat different conditions in different countries and as more studies are being done by researchers, we expect to see more countries legalize medicinal use of marijuana.
